As I mentioned in my previous post about LinkedIn, it is becoming more and more important for job seekers in today’s job market to have a LinkedIn profile. Unfortunately, many people rush through the completion of their profiles and end up making costly mistakes. Below I have mentioned three common mistakes which you should avoid when filling out your profile.
1) Incomplete profiles. I’ll start out with the most obvious issue – incomplete profiles. If an employer is browsing candidates on LinkedIn, and they find your incomplete profile, they are going to immediately move on to the next candidate. Including your job information, education, training, and other important details are essential, so make sure to complete your profile 100% for best results.
2) Low quality pictures. Your LinkedIn profile is representing you to potential employers; it is your first impression. Because of this, including a professional, high-resolution picture is important. Avoid cropping your Facebook pictures, and have a professional photographer (or family member) take a picture of you in business attire. Your appearance says a lot about your character and personality, so do not give employers the wrong impression up front.
3) Work email addresses. When creating your profile, make sure to use your personal email address and not your current work email address. Why, you ask? If you quit a job, or get fired, you will no longer have access to your work email account. If you need to reset your password on your LinkedIn account, it will send an email with instructions to whichever email address you used when you created your profile. If you used your work email address, you are out of luck and will need to create a new profile. If you used your personal email address, you will have no problems.
Although these tips are quite simple, they are also very common. A 100% completed profile with a professional picture makes you more attractive to potential employers. Spend 15-30 minutes analyzing and updating your LinkedIn profile today!
